The Affects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum Interview Series (Part 1)

This series includes questions asked to 26 women mostly across the U.S., the answers chosen were based on the most variety of answers provided.

Diagnosing Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Before you got pregnant, did you have any complications, what did your life look like? (were you able to do things normally and healthy)

Before HG, I wasn't in perfect health - I've had fibromyalgia since high school and migraines for as long as I can remember. I also had a bad bout with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) about five years ago that had me vomiting three to four times every day (if I only knew then what I know now - that would be a good day for me this pregnancy!) I could function normally most days, and before I got pregnant I was feeling better than I had in years.~Alicia

Before I was pregnant I was an aspiring CNA. I was able to take care of four patients with special needs (which was a very hard job physically and mentally). I walked a lot and did 4 mile trails. Everything was easier because I had my health.-Jessie

My husband and I had decided a year, prior to trying to get pregnant, that we should be as healthy as possible. We spent 2012 getting in the best shape of our lives exercising daily both cardio and strength training, eating incredible healthy, doctors appointments, vitamins, and tests tests and more tests. Before getting pregnant not only were we healthier than ever but also sure to have no medical deficiencies. -katelyn

Before I fell pregnant I was a normal healthy girl, trips to the beach and the movies and just everyday activities were done with ease. - Tahlea

Were you planning/excited to be a mom before finding out?

Yes, my husband and I planned our daughter and were shocked and excited since it only took us one month to conceive and I always wanted kids.- Mary

My pregnancy was a wish come true, 1st time trying after my wedding day & I was blessed to be carrying. - Kelly

My husband and I were married in August. We weren't totally ready for a baby, but decided to go off birth control because my doctor told me I would most likely have difficulty getting pregnant, and we would have to be trying for two years before insurance would pay for any fertility treatments. So we decided to try for the two years, then discuss whether we wanted to pursue fertility treatments, adoption or just not be parents.- Alicia

I was very excited to become a mom, due to our circumstances we actually waited a year longer than we wanted so it was long overdue -katelyn

How long did it take to diagnose that you had Hg and how did you feel about it?

I knew something was seriously wrong because I couldn't intake anything at all and was affecting my ability to do everyday task such as just brush my teeth. I called my ob and the nurse and they just said it's just your first trimester it will end soon, that happened all SIX TIMES! I finally went to the ER where I was diagnosed with Hg at about 9 or 10 weeks after my 2nd trip. I felt a relief like ok I'm glad there is a name to this and that someone actually is taking this serious and not stamping it as just "morning sickness". -Eva

4 weeks to be diagnosed with all 4 HG pregnancies, survived 4, mixed emotions as if weather I can do it or not, terminated 2 cause of HG. - Brandy

First pregnancy: undiagnosed, 2nd pregnancy: about 3 months despite me losing 40lbs in 3 months, and being hospitalized due to dehydration, malnutrition, etc. I eventually lost that baby not long after being diagnosed. With my daughter we knew going in and started IV 's and medication immediately. I felt challenged with DD but I was determined to battle it out and win. After losing our last pregnancy after our daughter, I feel slightly helpless but still determined. I almost just quit and went with adoption but my husband is supportive through it all and I couldn't do it again without him. I'm also very glad there's protocol's in place to get me through the next one if my resolve can withstand the difficulties.- Mary

For This Child I Prayed

Natalie Joy was born two weeks ago a few days before her due date, weighing a healthy 7 lbs 9oz, 20 1/2 inches long. We are both doing very well and I am so relieved and blessed to be a 3 time survivor of hyperemesis gravidarum and the complications that came with it. Words cannot express how happy we are to have her in our lives, she's so precious and a fairly easy newborn. Thank you to all who have prayed daily for Natalie and me, as well as for my husband and children who sacrificed time away from me/had to complete my tasks on top of their own. Thank you to those who visited me in the hospital various times, drove me home from the hospital, picked up my medicine and coke, and those who were sympathetic to and cared for my boys. It's been a very long journey but I am so happy to be on the other side. I know God has great things planned for Natalie and I can't wait to watch them unfold.

As the Storm Clouds Pass

I am 11 weeks pregnant, it is almost unbelievable to me that many women this far along have not even announced their pregnancy. Sometimes I wish I got to wait with that anticipation of telling people, having my own secret- but I know in the case of HG, I need all the support and prayers I can get. Although 11 weeks is hardly even a pregnancy to some women, I feel as though I have endured nearly a whole pregnancy. This is the slowest moving pregnancy I have ever experienced, mostly due to the fact I got sick 2 weeks earlier than the previous two, but I am doing my best to cherish any moment I can. If I make it a few minutes with little to no nausea, I try to enjoy it and thank God for just those few minutes which I had not had for weeks. If I only puke 3 times a day, it is something to celebrate.I am so happy to say that I have had more good days than bad the past week and I have been able to eat some regular foods and I am right now trying to "stock myself" up on fluids and food when I can tolerate it because I have a wedding to go to, and I have been so hoping to go- I just need a few more good days!.. I had originally had a dress I was making to wear but that will prob not be done unfortunately, however it is a blessing just to go and have a good time with the husband- we could use it.

What the 3rd time around the HG block has taught me:

1). It does not matter how good you did yesterday if you don't keep anything down today.
Dehydration can hit so hard and fast, you may have only thrown up 2 times yesterday, and today you are puking 16 times.

2). The best way to chart progress I have found is by how long you stay out of the hospital and how many good days in a row.
Just make sure you are staying out of the hospital because you are doing that well and not because you are laying on your bathroom floor dry heaving instead of going to the hospital.

3). Prevention plays a big role.
You cannot prevent HG except by not getting pregnant, but you can help yourself out by allowing yourself to lay on the couch when your not feeling well and let go of the house and let other people help you. I thought I was doing so well so I would get up and try to do stuff, and then the next day I would be headed towards not keeping anything down. It happens so fast and hg is vicious, best rule of thumb- don't push it. Do not start doing regular tasks until you have survived 2-3 days of significantly less puking and keeping enough down to give you energy. Pick only one task a day at first and work your way up.

4). Nobody wants to need the hospital but you need to be there if you feel like your dying.
Don't wait until your whole body shakes violently while you vomit, don't wait until your arms literally hurt and you feel like you do not have fluid around your heart. Don't wait until you can hardly stand the trip to the hospital, because you then have to wait there in the bed until they hook you up- it could be another couple hours if they need a specialist to get the iv in.I did this too myself probably 3 of the 5 times I went in. Its tourture- just go to the hospital, forget about the finances and get help. Think about your baby if you are only staying out because you feel like a wuss.HG is torture as it is, help yourself out and go to the hospital. You will have less chance of preterm labor, less chance of loosing fluid around the baby, less chance of loosing your child-its worth it.

5). STOP worrying about your other children at home, and put your health first.
You cannot spend all your time feeling guilty- you will feel guilty but remember the baby inside of you matters too. There are times in life when one child needs more attention than the other, with HG- it starts from conception. For most women the baby being inside is the easiest part of parenthood, not for HG moms. Your not a bad mom because everyone else is enjoying the summer or holidays with their kids and taking them places and you are stuck on the couch. You have a pregnancy DISEASE, you are surviving a potentially life threatening disease and so is your baby- keep fighting and don't let in distractions. For once in your life you really have to put your own health first and just focus on trying to get fluid and food down.

Another thing to add to the last point, your children will not remember this even if they cry now. They forget so quick and they adjust. Having a sibling added to their family will be so much more joy and take away all of this time. Your baby is worth fighting for and will be completely and totally worth it, the more heartache you endure the more special that child is. Your baby is a miracle, you cannot ensure that child will make it through hg, but you can do everything to our ability to fight and know that you gave it your all for that baby-and that makes you a great mom.

A Song for Baby Ziegler

You Are Wanted, You Are Precious
Written by: Ashley M. Ziegler

When I wake up every morning and I look into your eyes.
I'm reminded what it took to bring you to this life.
You may never know the trouble I have faced for you, thats sure-
but nothing of that matters, to me anymore.
So, now Ill say-

You are wanted, you are precious
You are loved forever more
You are prayed for, you are cherished
You are mine, and I am yours
Every moment, every minute, I look at you I say
Thank you Lord for bringing my little one to stay.
Thank you Lord for bringing this, today.

The days go on like thunder, the morning will arise.
I ask God the hard questions, I ask him why?
Have you  not seen the heartache, have you listened to my cries?
I know you love me God,but still I must ask why?
And He says-

You are wanted, you are precious
You are loved forever more
You are prayed for, you are cherished
You are mine, and I am yours
Every moment, every minute, I look at you I say
Thank you child for trusting in my word today
Thank you child for trusting me today
.

Only moments till I meet you, I can't wait to see your eyes
The trials do not matter, if it is for your life.
When they hand you over to me, I will thank God that's for sure,
because nothing much does matter to me anymore.

You are wanted, you are precious
You are loved forever more
You are prayed for, you are cherished
You are mine, and I am yours
Every moment, every minute, I look at you I say
Thank you Lord for bringing my little one to stay.
Thank you Lord for bringing this, today.

Anger and Finding a New Dream

My worst fear of the PICC came true, I got a blood clot. It only happens in 4% of PICC lines- and I am one of those lucky 4 in a 100. I was angry. Have I not been through enough? Why do I have such amazing odds for things? I am also 1-2 in a 100 of women to get HG. Why am I so "special"? I specifically did not want this PICC line because of the dangers of a blood clot, I tried to move my arm and I still got it only days after getting it placed. Why can't anything just work out good for me this pregnancy? I know my thoughts were getting selfish last night, but I did not care. I was mad at God, the blood clot and needing to change treatment options when something seemed to finally be working- that stinks. However the worst part, the reason I was most angry was because of the shots of blood thinners I have to take twice a day for the rest of pregnancy- they sting like 3 bee stings in a row. I have to fight not crying. The stinging lasts for a couple minutes. I may be mad at the doctors as well for choosing that option of a PICC, but I understand it had the best odds and the most convenient and most effective generally.I have struggled with the thought of " I got a blood clot because of something YOU chose for me and now I have to live with these painful shots until 6 weeks after delivery and I am nowhere near close". That does not really help anything though does it? I still have to take the shots, I still need a IV cath, I still need to make it through HG. It is no ones fault that I have hyperemesis.

I knew I would be sick getting pregnant, I was aware. I did not know I would be THIS sick for sure, I knew I could be worse but I don't know that anyone can be prepared to puke 12 times a day on anti vomit meds. I am mad HG seems to have changed our plans for a family of " more than 2 or 3" as another pregnancy could be life threatening. We both come from families of 6 and 7 children. That is normal to us, hg may not have affected me as badly if I only wanted 2 or 3 children. We all have our dreams for our lives and we are often crushed when they change and we have no control over our problems. Some people cannot have any children or struggle for years and years knowing there is little chance. Some people have disabilities and are never able to walk again, some become blind. What I am going through does not compare to any of those, my life plan has changed and that is going to be ok. I am happy to be able to be blessed (Lord willing) with 3 beautiful children, that is much more than many people get. I will be thankful for what I am given. I also have hope in what God has in store for our lives(more on that later).

In the midst of my anger asking God why last night, for the record I almost NEVER ask God why, I know I am "allowed" but I normally do not see a point, however last night I just cried" WHY ME" " Why did you choose me Lord?!" "Why must I suffer, surely you could have kept this from happening!", I then realized what HE did for me. He died for my sins, he was perfect, he never did ANYTHING wrong and he gave HIS perfect life for me. How dare I question HIM? His struggles were greater than mine. I then thought about Job loosing absolutely everything and still praising God. I have only lost the hope of a easier pregnancy, the dream of being "normal" of eating ice cream and pickles and glowing and really, have I lost any of that? I am only 7 weeks in, that is all still a possibility down the line. So all I have lost is the fact that I am going to be puking and need to go to the hospital frequently, I am weak and need those darn shots- really it is going to be ok. I also still have my baby, that is a blessing in ttself! I must admit I do have a hard time seeing this child as part of our family, I think that is normal this early on. It is just hard to picture and you have to fight the doubts that things wont turn out.

From the time I was very young I used to tell my sisters and mom that one day I would own a orphanage, I would read all the children bedtime stories, I would teach them individually school, my husband of course would love to do it as well:-D. I would be as closely a parent to those children as possible, I would make them feel loved and accepted and wanted. Of course I am older now and that is not really a possibility, however hg is Gods plan A for our family. He knew what I would go through, He knows what I am capable of and He will never leave me. How great it feels going through this to know I will NEVER EVER BE LEFT ALONE to suffer. I cannot say for sure that adoption is God's will for our family's future, but I have seen how God has worked in my heart to never let go of that passion for orphans, from the time I was probably 7, until now. The passion gets greater each year and every few months. I cannot speak for my husband, that is between him and God, but I have seen God at work on this matter before this pregnancy ever came to be. It is amazing to look back at something and see that God knew it all along. Yet, as I said I am not sure about Gods specific calling for our lives this is just something that has been on my mind and heart for awhile. God would have to put it all in place, the heart, the money, the education for dealing with children from hard places, the love for that individual child as your own. There is a lot to think about, but above all else- is it God's calling for us, we will just have to wait and see on that and you can feel free to pray on that.

So that, the hope of adoption, although it may never happen- helps me through the little bit of sadness I feel with this most likely being the last pregnancy for me. I am sad I never got my one good pregnancy, but I can accept that- I have 2 perfectly healthy little boys with one babe on the way! That is more important than some glowing pregnancy that only lasts so long. I am learning to accept that being a "normal" pregnant lady is not God's calling for me. I would never have advocated for the thousands of women who have HG if it were not for being"special". God's calling is always greater than my own hopes and dreams and I am starting to get excited about what He has in store for us!

The Road to Blessings

If I have been MIA recently, it is for a good reason! Here is what I wrote about 4- 5 days ago..
We are going to have another baby- yay! We are excited, I am almost 8 weeks and hg is starting to get into full force- trying to rob me of my the joy of this little blessing. I feel like I am clinging on  for dear life. I am not only physically fighting this pregnancy, I am spiritually, emotionally, and mentally fighting. I have said before I think Satan tries to play a part in hg with women, now up to 30% of hg sufferers abort- mostly their wanted, planned for pregnancies. I understand completely why these women get to that point, they feel desperate, little support, and they think it will never end- they think they will starve to death and they do not know what lies around the hg bend, they are scared. I am scared. Is God really going to let me have a third healthy baby after hg? Will this baby even survive? With all my might I hope so- I pray so. I know what lies ahead is greater than what I am suffering with now and I flat out don't want to do it again. I feel like a toddler throwing a tantrum-only inside. I don't want to God, please don't make me, just give me one hg free pregnancy! I want this baby, and even if he or she had not been planned, I would want this baby- God never gives you what you cannot handle. I'v done it before- I can do it again!(...but I don't want to have to)
Yesterday,my sisters in laws handed me a cute little stuffed dog with a baby blue cap on it- it is for the new baby. I literally snuggle with it to tell myself I am going through this for a really great reason- the best reason you could be sick actually. I am hoping when I make a trip to labor and delivery for fluids(probably within a week or so with how I am feeling)  that they will give me a ultrasound like they normally choose to for viability, age, and to make the mom feel more at ease. I am hoping I can talk them into just one ultrasound picture. This is uncommon,as the ultrasound is mostly for health reasons and it is not a photo op- I understand. I would love to just have one picture to stare at all day and tell myself- this is my baby, this is why I am sick- this is worth it. My baby counts on me, I am his or her only hope.

This was written  the night before two hospital trips and I got a midline- which is similar to a PICC but does not go all the way to the heart (thankfully) it goes to the top of my arm and it is a very skinny cathedar used with IV medication. I am on generic form of Zofran and pepcid (for stomach acid) at home and my body is responsive so that is good. Right now I still get sick once-twice a day. I suppose what I have with the medicine is similar to moderate morning sickness- but I am still having trouble trying different food I am not eating a ton-but def more than what I was, in the hospital I had about 3 regular meals which is great and was keeping water down! I think I would vomit even less if I stayed in bed all day but I have to be somewhat active for my kids. My strength is starting to come back slowly and I am able to lift my kids(only allowed to lift with right arm and assist with left-picc is in left arm) I will have it in for 6 weeks as long as no complications and then we will evaluate best treatment and see if I can wean onto oral drugs again. There were different treatment options- but none were really options for me.

They looked into a med pump but it is not made to be used with zofran and they said insurance companies get out of paying for it that way since it is not recommended, that would be a needle under a few layers of skin on my stomach and you have to carry it around- many women in my hg group love it but they think that it is not as effective as a PICC and is a hazard with young active children that could pull on it or sit on it accidentally, they also have women who are too scared to insert needle and the needle place needs to be changed.

They considered IV treatment, but that is a prick every 3 days with a new one, it only goes so far into the skin and could be pulled out easily if a young child touched, can cause trauma to veins, and they also needed an anesthesiologist to try TWICE to get it in at the hospital because my veins are very small so a regular home nurse would prob have issue and it would be painful to me.

I was petrified of the PICC, i was bawling my eyes out when they told me(gave myself a headache)- and they did not give me very much time-I found out from the guy from the home care coming up and giving me my bag of supplies, the communication int he hospital was pretty bad. The labor and delivery floor- everyone communicated-but the floor I was sent to because of room shortage, nobody was communicating well or quickly. The nurse I had knew I was getting a PICC but took her time telling me because she knew i did not want it- she did say that the team was contemplating if it was right choice for me and then the next i heared from her she was getting off the phone saying they were on their way up to get me. I was at the hospital by myself and I was very scared- of the procedure and risk of infection and blood clots. I was told it is very rare and that they think this is the best option for the baby. My nurse came over held my hand and literally said " you need to eat , if you cant eat you could loose the baby"...and that was it. The procedure hurt less than getting an IV-since getting an IV usually takes them several tries and fishing around my veins. It is a little sore. Home care taught me how to give myself meds and flush the cath with saline to prevent blockage. In a few days I may be well enough to sew and take care of kids regularly:-).. This may be the most "normal" of all my pregnancies. My dr said she did not want me to only be able to eat one meal after hospital like last time and wanted me to not have to be on bedrest. The nurses told me I shouldnt be in the hospital constantly with sick people while pregnant so home health was the best option and picc was the only option with the information given to them about pumps.

So, Your Wife Is Barfing Her Guts Out by Brad Klingele

Sick and tired of my hyperemesis gravidarum posts? ok, ok ..but here is one you just have to read...

So, Your Wife Is Barfing Her Guts Out:
A Guy’s Guide to Hyperemesis Gravidarum

by Brad Klingele

I am the proud dad of seven kids, all of whom were given the gift of life through my wife’s hyperemetic torments. Yes, she did want the kids, and so I wasn’t a jerk on this account. However, I have, shall we say, incrementally improved from being what I thought was supportive to being supportive in her eyes. Thank God I had six kids to better my record!

Following is a bullet-point approach to supporting your spouse from a very “guy’s guy” perspective. This is blunt and unapologetic, because you probably are tired and –like me—want to spend very little time reading up on how to be a dad, husband, etc., because you are in the midst of insanity.

1. Honor any and all food requests.

I am a cheap German. If you are either a cheap German, or fiscally frugal (or even fiscally moderate), get over it. This is going to cost you big time in gas, food, and other seemingly incoherent and random requests.

Suck it up. Just do what she says, when she says, and do it with a loving tone, smile, and say, “I’m so grateful for what you are doing for our baby!” Think of it this way: going into a bit of credit card debt by getting random things at random times is way cheaper than marriage counseling later. Go get whatever she wants, whenever she wants, and be prepared for the reality that when you get back, she may not want it! Get over yourself and keep thinking “she won’t be insane forever, and neither will I.”

If you help her now, your wife will remember how good you were to her and feel very close to you someday again. Conversely, if you apply fiscal logic or any logic at all to her requests and hesitate, she will feel abandoned and protective and defensive and angry (not to mention hungry).

2. Do not question.

If you apply logic, you will be frustrated. This is not because your wife is objectively illogical: her requests seem illogical to you because you aren’t going through this. Your stomach is not churning at thoughts, smells, ideas, and whatever else comes at you. You aren’t scared of what is happening to your own body. You aren’t helpless and needing someone to take care of you. You aren’t being prodded by doctors and nurses and morons and being “crackered” (see below). You aren’t exhausted, nauseous, and sleep deprived.

3. Do chores (or delegate).

Chores are all on you now, buddy. Let her chill and be—by outside standards—completely, unproductively useless. (In fact, she’s producing a whole new person!)

If you have funds, suck it up and get cleaning help a few times a week. In this situation, prudence is saving your energy for being really kind and patient with your spouse. She is worth the stretch, and so is your marriage.

If you don’t have funds, look up how to clean on the internet. A few tips: declutter and just keep cleaning every second that you can. Wash dishes as you cook—don’t let them pile up. Better yet, go buy yourself food from elsewhere, because cooking just smells up the house & that brings the barf train back. If you must cook, be prepared to prepare your food out of sight. Cereal, peanut butter & jelly, fruits & raw veggies are going to be your friend for a while, most likely.

4. Stay clean.

Seems obvious, but the smell of husband is a sure-fire trigger for many women. Shower often and brush your teeth a lot so your breath doesn’t stink any more than necessary.

5. Forget about sex. No, really.

This is not happening, period. Yes, it stinks. What do you do? Avoid going online alone. Really. This is a time when you may be tempted, because at one time you were actually having sex, and now you have just quit cold turkey. Instead, regularly call and get together with a few of your guy friends –even just at your house for beers. Keep up your friendships so that you aren’t sexually frustrated, exhausted, and lonely–the perfect recipe for getting into porn or being overly flirtatious at the office.

6. You can’t fix it.

Most guys want to fix things. You cannot fix this. The closest that you will get to “fixing” things is to do what your wife tells you when she tells you how she tells you and with a big freaking smile on your tired face.

7. Be on her side.

If you are kind of a non-confrontational peacemaker, be prepared to be uncomfortable when stupid doctors and nurses question the severity of your wife’s sickness. You gotta man up.

First, research the heck out of hyperemesis gravidarum. See the website www.helpher.org for great tips.

Second, be firmly firm and don’t let doctors or nurses do the following:

• “Cracker” her by telling your wife that she should eat small amounts of crackers, or drink ginger ale, or smell lemons. The cracker-er is an idiot, or at least an uninformed medical person (a functional idiot).
Made with <3 for my HG sisters

• Tell her it’s in her head. This deserves a thorough firm dressing down in the following way: “I used to think so too, but that theory is actually a thing of the past. A good deal of research has been done of late on this. Please see the sheet I have here with all of the resources & journal references.” (Hand them a print-out from the American Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics at http://www.apgo.org/images/nvp/nvp_monograph.pdf or from the research section of http://www.helpher.org/HER-Research/) If they persist, ask for a new doctor or nurse to be assigned and, if needed, file a formal complaint against them.

• Give your wife cheap or inadequate meds. Zofran is the master. Generic Zofran sometimes works, but sometimes doesn’t.

8. Indulge in a little self-pity—just not in front of her!

You need guy friends who will listen to you complain and moan, so that you aren’t alone, and your wife won’t have to listen to you complain and moan. You can support her without asking for her support. This is vital. She cannot support you emotionally, and no matter what kind of Vulcan you are, you have emotional needs, felt or not. You may feel really put out and tired and think, “What a rip-off. My once attractive sexy wife is tired, cranky, demanding weird foods, complaining of smells and lights and whatever else, and I am supposed to take care of everything and also these food requests are really expensive and random and seem to occur at the exact wrong time!” Fine. Vent to your guy friends, not to her.

9. Find meaning in your suffering.

For those who are Christian, remember that marriage is not a contract. You are acting out Christ’s love. That means a cross is involved. You probably feel crucified to your needs and desires. Your wife sure feels that way. Lean on the prayers of friends. As much as possible, pray yourself and ask for strength to resist the temptation to give in to self-pity and grumpiness.

10. Know that it will end.

The army has a great phrase for this: “Embrace the suck.” You will get through this in nine months or less (or a bit longer if your wife has a difficult recovery). That sounds like a long time, but if you set your expectations low, you will either be happily surprised or at least realistically prepared.

You are going to have an awesome new person in your life. Your wife will be very grateful—even really turned on, eventually—if you take care of yourself and take care of them without objection or complaint, and with joy and expressed empathy (even when you don’t feel particularly empathetic). If you stick it out, your marriage will be really strong. (And conversely, very damaged if you don’t.)

Special Thanks to Brad and Cecelia for putting this together and willingly allowing me to post it.

We are so blessed to have social media- please use it to the advantage of these women, their babies and their families. Share on facebook, twitter, and pin on pinterest. I cannot make anyone care about this cause but God can and I pray he lays this upon your heart to advocate  for the women who are too sick to do it themselves. If you can share silly videos that bring a moment of enjoyment- you can share this, that will change lives.

Because it Matters

One of my hyperemesis gravidarum shirts

In honor of awareness day quickly approaching and today most likely being the last day to get hg t shirts or wristbands in time for awareness day, I will not be posting any of my current projects and will instead be providing links to other hg blogs and videos so that people can separate the myth vs truths in their heads and see that although this is a "rare" disease, OVER 50,000 women are hospitalized every year- and that is not counting the ones who do not have knowledge that there is help for their condition. HG can effect any woman, any pregnancy- although it often runs in families , it can start with any woman. There is no known cause and there is no cure other than delivery. Please consider taking the time to read or watch one of these links if you are still unsure if these women are " really that sick" or overreacting to be dramatic.

HG does not just only affect the suffering hg woman, if they have older children they do not have a attentive mother for quite some time, relationships with spouses can be strained due to added pressure on husbands and them not being able to fully comprehend how the wife is feeling. Many women will get through this time and have a healthy baby thanks to EARLY medical help( iv fluids, nausea meds, and bedrest) but often time they do not seek that care because no one is urging them to and is instead saying in nice and not so nice ways " everyone has morning sickness, your fine dont be a baby". If you know of a woman loosing more than 5% body weight and not keeping fluids or food down for 24 hours or days in a row, i beg you to encourage her to get help. A sweet friend of mine told me that I would feel so much better if i just got fluids and that theres no way i could drink as much as they would give- because she urged me, I called the dr and they told me to go to the er right away, which may have saved my baby's life and saved me from more suffering and depression. So share these posts, put a " i support hg awareness" badge on your  facebook profile picture until may 15th, and pray for these women. Nobody chooses hg, after surviving once you pray(as everyone hopes and tries to convince) you will not relive it if you have another, they choose to have baby and are often shocked when the excitement and glowing never comes until hg ends.

A hyperemesis video story

Info for friends and families from HER foundation

How does awareness of hyperemesis help?

- Doctors and nurses hear about it more (even though they may not see it often) and provide more support and intervention(in a good way) quicker, leading to less abortions, miscarriages and depression.

- Families urged women to get help earlier, and do not downplay due to ignorance.

- Women have more support on the web(often the only place for support as they are too sick to go anywhere).

- More financial support of hg research, leading to healthier moms and babies.

- More information on the web for husbands and families who want to help their loved one struggling.

 - Less isolation of hg women-better emotionally/mentally.

- Insurance companies will allow and cover cost of medicines like zofran.Chemotherapy  meds are often the only medicine that help. It is your lifeline.

- More social understanding so myths and hurtful things said out of lack of compassion and ignorance will not be said to struggling women (aka. Just tell yourself your not going to puke- mind over matter. Are you sure you want this pregnancy, maybe your body is trying to get rid of it because its not meant to be? At least its not cancer, its ok if you do what you have to do God will forgive you)..yes these have all been said to these women.

- More people willing to join in research and funding- leading to finding the cause, better medicine and possible cure of HG.

- More hospitals will allow women in labor and delivery for hg care so they do not have to wait puking in the ER for 4+ hours sometimes once  or twice a week.

HG awareness WILL save lives- and I will forever believe that every single baby should be given the best chance to survive and thrive- and every mother should be given the best chance to hold their babies alive and healthy.

If you are a mother of at least 2 children with which you have never had morning sickness/lost more than a couple pounds  and would like to be involved in the hyperemesis study which is hoped to be ended this year(2012) which has already conducted 11 studies off of the research please email me at itsybitsylittleblessings@gmail.com or write a comment below. Because of this current study they are doing they have already found that there seem to be long term effects on hyperemesis babies who survive and are"healthy" including behavioral issues/mental health as adults. Study involves- saliva sample and multiple choice survey on pregnancies.

May 15th is a Very Special Day....and Giveaway UPDATED

UPDATE/EDIT: T shirts can be sent to be received by may 15th only if you buy within the week- so do it now!!

I was finally there, I was going to feel better in a few short hours. I had answered at least 20 questions and was dressed in one of those cold hospital gowns. The huge mountain I had anticipated was before me,rising higher and higher in my head- how was I going to survive another several months of this? There is no going back now, I have to go through with this. I was going to go through 9 very long months of pregnancy, and it meant that I would be on the couch puking for the first half of it,  unable to care for my first son as normal, barely able to wash my own hair because I was too weak to hold my arms up that long and then it should/hopefully get better to where I would be able to manage it enough to only throw up once a day, and then maybe twice a week. I knew I would get there, I knew in my head I would survive-but I just could not stand the thought of it.

A second nurse came to try to get the needle in my arm, here we go again- I had been through this before- I knew the drill, try to poke me a few times, then try a smaller needle, a few times and eventually after a 4-7 painful pricks the IV would be in, then once the very slow draining bag of fluids and medicine would be in, and I would feel good enough to at least eat that night.A friendly nurse talked to me (not knowing this was not my first go around) " Just think, by twelve weeks this will all be over:-)" I wanted to cry, to which my mother in law corrected her 'well, not for her, it lasts the whole pregnancy'. " Oh, my" She did not really seem to know what to say but asked about my child at home, was it a girl or boy?, how old? and then she said (which I can never forget)" was he worth it?". The thing is, from what i remember, I did not hear her  say " wasn't he worth it!" as a statement, it was a question- " was he worth it?" It begged me to think, as a million memories like waves came through my mind- the most beautiful slide show.  Any mom will tell you, you do not even have to think before saying Yes! Of course my child was worth it. I nodded my head, tearing up then burst into tears. God sent that lady to say that to me, to change my thoughts and to remember why I had choose this again.

There were a few more hospital trips- one of which I got a ultrasound, best mental health fix for a hg sufferer. There is no way to fully explain how dark this period of time can feel as you are walking through it, and you do come out of it. Thankfully for me I came out on the other end twice, with two very healthy amazing little boys, all women are not that lucky though. I would do it all over in a heartbeat for their heartbeat if I had to.

This is just one of my my days with Hyperemesis Gravidarum but there were many more similar. Regular care tasks of yourself are goals of your day. Getting a shower is so difficult- you are too weak to stand for 10 min straight, walking from one room to another nearly always results in vomiting, you have what feels like food poisoning(or hangover- so iv been told) 24/7, laundry, dishes, nothing will get done unless someone else does it, you can't rock your babies, read to your toddler, even sing to your children because you will vomit. You think you are literally going to starve to death, you are so hungry-but your body is rejecting food and water. Those are just a few of the physical aspects, but there are some very real mental problems- Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder being the most common. You fear for the life of your child most days. You are left, even after the birth of your child with an intense fear of pregnancy, any time you feel nauseous it brings back all your memories. What I personally went through was what I would consider average/normal HG, many women have it much worse and live in the hospital for weeks- months or are at home with a nurse that comes to care for medications through PICC and IVs. Vomiting up 10-20 times a day is "normal" for this condition-but it DOES need medical attention.

"HG is a debilitating and potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss, malnutrition, and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting with potential adverse consequences for the newborn(s)."  hyperemesis.org
